The 2011-2012 Application for Free and Reduced Price School Meals will be mailed out to each household this week. This application is also available for printing online. If you have received a Direct Certification letter from the Office of Temporary Assistance there is no need to fill out an application, please forward this letter to the Food Service Department at 369 Sixth North Street, Syracuse, NY 13208 or give it to your child's school.

Superintendent Contreras Announces 2011-2012 Student Academic Calendar

I am writing to share with you important information regarding changes to the 2011-2012 student academic calendar.

The number of half days for students has been reduced from previous years. This action is being taken to give students more time for instruction. I believe our students need more time in the classroom -- not less -- if we are to improve student achievement.

High School Students Urged to Submit Entries for Publication and Prizes

Students currently attending grades 9 through 12 in the Syracuse City School District are eligible to submit entries in the categories of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual arts to the Stone Canoe, A Journal of Arts, Literature and Social Commentary published by University College of Syracuse University and sponsored by the Gifford Foundation.

All City Summer Musical-Seussical the Musical Set for August 12th, 13th and 14th at Nottingham

Production for the 2011 All City Summer Musical-Seussical the Musical is underway. Students and staff have been rehearsing daily in preparation for opening night. Nottingham High Schools Len Fonte Auditorium is the site for this year’s production with show times set for Friday, August 12th and Saturday, August 13th at 7:00 PM and Sunday, August 14th at 2:00 PM.   

Webster Students Enjoy Summer Program

Students from the Webster summer program have been very busy this year. In addition to working hard in the classroom they have taken field trips, learned about the parks in their neighborhood and used their artistic abilities to add some color to sidewalks around school.
Ms. Tuttle and her art/photography class have been working on a chalk mural on the sidewalk outside of the school. The students were split in two groups and they voted on what they wanted to draw.

Say Yes to Education Summer Institute

The Say Yes to Education Summer Institute opened in the Carrier Dome with an adventure based training of 450 area college students.  The students are working this summer as counselors at various elementary schools throughout the Syracuse City School District as part of the summer camp program.

Students in the Bellevue Elementary School summer program recently received 300 free books generously donated by Books Are Food For Thought. Books Are Food For Thought aims to increase literacy by bringing donated children’s books to schools and community organizations in the City of Syracuse.

Porter Pandas Participate in Please Stand Up! Anti-Bullying Program

The Please Stand Up anti-bullying program was introduced this past school year at Porter Elementary School and was a resounding success. The program was piloted in the spring taking place after school, three days per week. Six different clubs were formed and available for the 5th and 6th grade students to participate in.
