Break Fast For Success

The Syracuse City School District has been awarded a grant from the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) designed to increase the number of already eligible children who actually receive breakfast at school. Syracuse is one of four school districts from across the United States chosen to participate in the program.

The program is funded through a generous grant from the Walmart Foundation. "I am thrilled to be partnering with the American Association of School Administrators and Walmart as we look to enhance our school breakfast program through new and innovative ways of serving our students," said Syracuse City School District Superintendent Sharon Contreras. "It is important for our students to begin their day with a nutritious breakfast and this program will greatly improve our daily participation rate," added Contreras.

The initiative is designed to create broad awareness regarding school breakfast offerings and to increase the average daily participation. In Syracuse, every child in the district is eligible for school breakfast yet less than 50% of the children participate. Syracuse was selected by an expert panel from among interested districts across the country.

The program is being phased in at different schools throughout the district and will be tailored to each school community. Elementary students will have the option of taking part in the "Breakfast in the Classroom" program while secondary students will have a "Grab and Go" meal. All the breakfasts will include milk, a fruit/vegetable option, grains and protein.
