Grant Middle School Students Support Newtown Peers

Students who returned to Sandy Hook Elementary School this week were treated to a winter wonderland of handmade snowflakes, some of which were crafted by students at Grant Middle School.

The Connecticut PTA, in conjunction with the Newtown Arts and Cultural Commission put out the call for students around the country to make snowflakes that would be used to decorate Chalk Hill School, the new home for the Sandy Hook Elementary students.

Nottingham DECA Project Sends a Message

Three students at Nottingham High School are sending a strong message to their classmates: Texting and driving kills people. The trio worked on a school-wide public service campaign to stop the dangerous habit that included a pledge not to text and drive, thumb bands and an appearance by the Grim Reaper, who showed up at the school’s open house.

Senior James Appleton, junior Kayla Walker and sophomore Robert Edwards chose the campaign for their DECA project. They are creating a manual on how to put together a public service campaign that will be entered in a competition.

Corcoran Students Headed to Music Festivals

Four Corcoran students have been chosen for this year’s All-County and All-State music festivals. The students had to audition in order to participate.

Joshua Hintz, a Corcoran senior was chosen to be a second tenor in the Senior High All-County Chorus.

Gabriel Smolnycki, also a senior, was selected to participate in the Senior High All-County Band, playing bass clarinet. He is ranked third in the county.

Freshman Cate Streissguth, a French horn player, will play in the  Junior High All-County Band. Cate is ranked in the top 10 in the county.

Fowler Artists’ Work on Display
12/18/12

Artwork from students at Fowler High School will be displayed at the Mundy Library in January.

The students, who painted using acrylics, had the choice of doing a dragon skull still life or a vase with flowers and squash still life.  Ms. Dugger, their art teacher, said the assignment helps the students learn about composition and color theory.

Nottingham Singers Perform at Festival of Trees

Singers from Nottingham raised $250 at a Winter Concert at the school in early December. Members of the Concert Choir and the Vocal Jazz group performed at the show.

The money raised will be used to purchase new chairs for the groups’ music classroom. The students, who also performed at the Festival of Trees at the Everson Museum of Art, have raised enough money to purchase 11 chairs so far.

ITC Gets Classroom Jeopardy! Game

Students at the Institute of Technology received a visit from Kelly Miyahara from the JEOPARDY! Clue Crew in early December. Kelly demonstrated Classroom Jeopardy!, an affordable electronic version of the quiz show, to the students in teacher Diana Perez’s Spanish class.

Students Participate in Afterschool Arts Program

School can teach a child many things, but an education is not complete without some hands-on experience outside the classroom.  A select group of students at Fowler High School are getting that experience through their work with the La Casita Afterschool Program for the Arts. The program gives them the opportunity to learn about art and to create their own masterpieces.
