Measuring On the Playground
Can you find the perimeter? Look at me. I can measure this shape. Wow, how long is that line! These were sounds were all over the Dr. King playground last week. The 3rd grade students have been studying area and perimeter and why they are important in real life. Students spent an afternoon collaborating in small groups to identify the area, perimeter and names of 11 shapes. The groups were allowed to use yardsticks and measuring tape to collect and record data. Students further discussed how area and perimeter are attributes of plane shapes.
