Project Goals

Each Center will enact a research-based, child-centered curriculum promoting:

  • oral language development
  • phonological awareness
  • awareness of the conventions of print
  • alphabet knowledge
Each Center will provide parents with the knowledge and resources to support their children's language learning through access to a lending Resource Library stocked with books, learning games and software.  A computer will be available.

Each Center will create and sustain classrooms rich in oral language and print with adult/child ratios that support language and literacy learning.

Each Center will improve and intensify professional development from our administrators, teachers, and paraprofessionals to plan, facilitate and assess scientifically based instruction, including instruction to support English language learners and children with disabilities.

Each Center will systematically measure children's growth in the critical areas of language, early reading development, teaching practices and environment.  Instruction and programs will be adjusted accordingly.

Each Center will share our work at the local, state and national levels contributing to the body of knowledge as to what works to support language and literacy learning for our nation's young children.

ERF activities will be fully aligned with Reading First activities at the target sites (and/or feeder schools), thereby providing a truly comprehensive approach to reading instruction in pre-k through grade 6 that is validated by scientifically-based reading research.
