How can you support your child's learning?

Listen and talk to your child.
Read together everyday.
  • Point out pictures in the book and name them.
  • Ask questions about the story.  "What do you think will happen next?"  "Who is your favorite character?" "Why?"
  • Think up a different ending to the story together.
Visit school often and participate in family events
Take your child to the library to borrow books to read together.  Show your child that you read by borrowing books from the library for yourself.
As you read to your child, stop now and then and point to letters and words; then point to the pictures they stand for.  Your child will begin to understand that the letters form words and that words name pictures.  He/She will begin to know that each letter has its own sound which is an important skill in learning how to read.
Help your child learn how to handle books.
  • Talk about the picture on the cover of the book.
  • Point to the place where the story starts and later where it ends.
  • Let your child help turn the pages.
When you start a new page, point to where the words begin and follow the words by moving your finger beneath them as you read.
Give your child lots of opportunities to write by encouraging him/her to draw and scribble.  This is the first step to learning how to write letters.
