Early Reading First Project Overview

The Syracuse City School District was awarded an Early Reading First grant in 2004 to transform 5 early childhood sites, 4 pre-k centers in elementary buildings and the Southwest Early Childhood Center (now moved to the Elmwood Early Education Center), into Preschool Centers of Excellence.  These Centers implement child-centered, scientifically based reading research literacy instruction for their 3 and 4 year olds.  Teachers are supported by intensive professional development including mentoring by onsite literacy coaches.  Each Center houses an ERF Resource Room where staff and parents can access additional materials and an online computer.  Parents are fully involved in the Project and have the opportunity to join the ERF Parent Advisory Board, attend parent training sessions and enroll in credit bearing classes.  Each child receives 36 books annually to build a home library.  These books are accompanied by activity packets and materials for use at home.
