Sample Activities for Promoting Phonemic Awareness In Young Children |
|
| 1. Syllable Segmenting and Blending (small or whole group) Model the use of manipulatives to divide the child's name as they say it: Ex. Lin-da, Ver-on-i-ca, Chris-to-pher - Have children make a list of
animals and foods. Repeat the above task. |

| 2. Rhyming (small group) Have the children listen to groups of 2 words to help them identify rhyming words. Ex. bat - rat, sun - fun, man - fan - After children are able to complete the above task, add another word to the group that doesn't rhyme and encourage children to identify which word doesn't belong. - Read nursery rhymes and encourage
them to repeat them and identify the rhyming words. |
|
| 3. Onset Rime (small group) Using a small set of letters demonstrate to the child how we form the word "cat." Manipulate the letters to divide them into onset-rime. Repeat if necessary and encourage the child to make other words with the "at" rime in them. - If appropriate, introduce other simple rimes such
as ar, en, an. |
|
| 4. Segmenting Words into Compounds (small group) Using a variety of letters, model to children how to make the word "cat." Demonstrate how we can divide each word into component sounds. (Ex. c-a-t). Extend the activity by substituting the beginning sound to form other words and repeat the activity. |
